How to Choose a Therapist

There are many different therapists and types of therapists and its challenging to know who may be a good match for you.  The following guidelines have been arranged to help you find a therapist that would be right for you.

Some questions to ask yourself before you begin your search:

  • Does the gender of the therapist matter?
  • Does location of office matter?  Is it accessible by public transportation?
  • Do I want to potentially use insurance?
  • Does sexual orientation matter?
  1. Know that it is your right to interview therapists before making a decision about working with them.  However, there is still a charge for the introductory session as most of them are actual working sessions.  If finances are a concern for you, ask if the therapist you want to meet with offers any special rates for the introductory appointment.
  2. Nobody wants to put their intensely personal emotional issues into the hands of an inexperienced or ineffective practitioner. Be sure to have an idea of what you want before you go into the office for the first time.  This will help you make more empowered decisions about your healing.  Consider the above questions along with what you feel you would like to get out of your therapeutic experience.  If you don’t know, that’s ok too.
And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.
